A Guide to Measuring for Made-to-Order Curtains in UK Homes

Transforming your home with custom-made curtains is an excellent idea. But for a flawless result, the most crucial first step is taking the correct measurements. By carefully following the steps in this guide, you'll ensure your curtains fit perfectly and complement your space beautifully.

Step 1: Decide on the Style of Your Curtains

For fabric curtains, there are three main styles to consider regarding length:

  • Floor Sweeping: The curtain hangs to the floor and pools slightly, creating a more luxurious and dramatic look.
  • Floor Breaking: The curtain just touches the floor, offering a relaxed and modern feel.
  • Below Sill: The curtain hangs to just below the window sill. This is ideal for shorter windows or where there's a radiator below.

Your choice here will directly affect the drop measurement you take.

Step 2: Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • A Metal Tape Measure: Essential for accurate measurements, as fabric tapes can stretch.
  • A Pen and Paper: To write down your measurements.
  • A Step Ladder: For safety when measuring high windows.

Step 3: Take Your Width and Drop Measurements

Width Measurement

Measure the length of your curtain pole or track.

  • A curtain pole is usually installed to extend 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) on each side of the window opening. This ensures the curtains completely cover your window when open.
  • If you don't have a curtain pole yet, install it first, then measure the total length from end to end.

Important: This measurement is not the final width of your curtains. We calculate the fabric fullness (pleat allowance) for you. You just need to provide the exact pole or track length.

Drop Measurement

Take the drop measurement from the bottom of the curtain rings or hook (the very bottom of your curtain pole).

  • Measure from this point down to where you want the curtain to end.
  • For Floor Sweeping: Measure down to the floor and add 5–10 cm (2–4 inches).
  • For Floor Breaking: Measure down to the floor and add 1–2 cm (0.5–1 inch).
  • For Below Sill: Measure down to the bottom of the window sill and add 10–15 cm (4–6 inches).

Important Tips

  • Check Your Measurements Thrice: Incorrect measurements can ruin the fit. Double-check every number.
  • Get a Second Pair of Hands: For wide windows, a helper makes the process easier and more accurate.
  • Use the Right Unit: Our order form supports both inches and centimetres. Select the correct unit to avoid confusion.

By following these simple steps, you can confidently order custom curtains that perfectly fit your windows and transform the look of your home.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Measuring Curtains

1. What measurements do I need to take for my curtains?
Two key measurements: the width (the total length of your curtain pole or track) and the drop (from the bottom of the curtain rings to where you want the curtain to end).
2. Where should I measure the width from?
Measure the total length of your curtain pole or track, end to end. We handle the fullness allowance.
3. Where should I start measuring the drop from?
Begin from the bottom of your curtain rings or hooks.
4. How do I decide on the right curtain length?
Add extra length depending on the style: Floor Sweeping (+5–10 cm), Floor Breaking (+1–2 cm), or Below Sill (+10–15 cm).
5. How high should I mount my curtain pole?
About 15 cm (6 inches) above the top of the window frame for a neat look and unobstructed opening.
6. Should I use inches or centimetres?
Both are accepted. Use whichever you prefer and select it on the form.
7. Can I get a refund if my measurements are wrong?
No. Curtains are custom-made to your specifications, so incorrect measurements cannot be refunded. Measure carefully.
8. What if my window has a radiator below it?
Choose the "Below Sill" length to prevent blocking heat flow.
9. My window is not perfectly square. What should I do?
Take measurements in at least three places (top, middle, bottom) and use the smallest measurement to avoid bunching.
10. Do I need to account for the pleats myself?
No. Just provide the pole or track length. We calculate the fabric for the pleat style you choose.
